AVM Monday Morgan, Coordinator of Benue Rebirth Movement (BRM) in his opening speech said the purpose of the visit was to seek the support of the governor towards the actualization of a Benue Governor of Zone C extraction.
General Harrison Adoga (RTD), speaking on behalf of Idoma Generals said whatever position available to anybody in Benue State from the gateman to the position of governor should be open to all and enjoined the governor to support the quest of the people of Zone C to produce the next governor of Benue State.
Prof. Owoicho Akpa spoke on behalf of Idoma League of Professors.
He said by the nature of governor Samuel Ortom that he has come to know, he’s confident the visit will not be another ceremony.
He said like never before, they are united in the pursuit to actualize the dream of a governor of Zone C extraction and the League of Idoma Professors are solidly behind the agitation.
Comfort Agogo spoke for Zone C women and specifically mentioned that the Idomas and Igedes are one and very united on this course.
She told the governor that with the zeal he pursued his re-election, she’s pleading with him to bring that to bear on this project.
She said the people of Zone C want governorship and not party chairmanship and she’s happy that the chairmen of the two leading political parties in the state were present. She asked that the position of party Chairman should go to another zone.
Hon George Ali who spoke on behalf of Zone C ALGON said the governor is known for pacesetting and as someone who appointed the first Chief Judge from Zone C and first woman Head of Service, he believes he’ll be part of history again.
Gideon Obande spoke for Zone C Youths. He said it will be a great legacy if the governor ensures his successor is from zone C.
Sir John Ngbede, State Chairman of the PDP said it’s the party that has the power to zone the governorship and it’s only for the Governor to support and approve of it as the leader of the party.
He said he’s ready to resign as the chairman of the party to make sure this dream is actualized. He said he’s also qualified to contest the governorship and warn those blackmailing him as someone looking for the deputy governorship position to desist from doing so.
He asked the Idomas to be serious and unite because on two previous occasions, it was the Idomas that scuttled their own chances of producing the candidate of the PDP.
Comr. Abba Yaro, Chairman of the APC said he’s fully in support of the agitation and pleads with the governor to go to his closet and seek the voice of God because he know God will lead him to Zone C.
Distinguished Senator Abba Moro first thanked the governor for making out time to receive the people of Zone C. He said he’s aware of the sensitivity of the issue at hand.
He said he’s happy today because this was the plea he started at the State Congress of the PDP some months back.
In his words, “After that speech, I’ve been praying and I know you’ve been praying and I know God is a God of justice.
If you leave us, we won’t succeed because this is a game of numbers and if the Tiv people decides to produce the governor and the deputy, they will win but the question is, is it fair?
I know you will say you will ensure a level playing field but a level playing field works when there are equal number of players on the pitch, we don’t have to pretend about it, we’re not equal.
I want to end this by asking you to take the bull by the horn by making history for yourself, the Tiv nation and Nigeria by supporting someone from Zone C to become the next governor of Benue State”.
Dr Samuel Ortom, in his response said “In my position, if I don’t use wisdom and diplomacy, I’ll rock the boat.
If we give the PDP ticket to someone from Zone C and the other party gives theirs to someone from Zone A for instance, we’ll lose and vice versa.
I believe there’s need for inter-party dialogue and if there’s a consensus, I’m for it.
You have my blessings, it’s your right and you’re competent and qualified for the post”.
